Cataracts

Cataracts Evaluation and Management

Cataracts are the clouding of the lens in the eye, making your vision appear to be foggy. The lens inside of the eye is normally clear at a young age. Through time and sun/uv exposure, the lens becomes cloudy. It creates glare and halos in your vision especially at night. It can also reduce your vision so that it can become harder to drive. The cataract evaluation is routinely done with your annual exam at Balfour Vision Optix Optometry. You can schedule an appointment with one of our doctors if you are experiencing symptoms.

Comprehensive Eye Exams

Comprehensive Eye Exams

On average, we recommend scheduling an appointment once every two years to ensure your eyes are remaining healthy. If you have been diagnosed with an eye condition, however, we recommend scheduling an appointment once or twice a year depending on the severity.

During your appointment, we will review your patient history, visual acuity, perform preliminary tests, and evaluate your eyes’ overall health.

Computer Vision

Computer Vision

Computer Vision is a relatively new term within the optometry field and refers to eye problems associated with the prolonged use of computers and electronics that utilize a digital screen. Although it can be temporary, there are times when computer vision can strain the eyes to a degree that permanently affects your vision as well. An existing eye condition can worsen as the eyes try to focus and adjust to a computer screen, and precautions should be taken if you spend long hours in front of a computer screen.

If you have been experiencing blurry vision, dry eyes, eye strain, headaches, neck or back pain, try adjusting the lighting, posture, and the distance in front of your computer screen. If computer vision symptoms persist, call us to request an appointment, we will perform a full evaluation.

Diabetic Eye Care

Diabetic Eye Care

Diabetes can affect more than just your blood sugar. It can change your vision and cause permanent damage to your eyes if your blood sugar is not under control. The vision loss if severe can cause you to have trouble with everyday tasks even if you have regular glasses or contacts. It can even cause blindness. It is important to have blood sugar under control and check your eyes yearly. At Balfour Vision Optix Optometry, we have a digital retinal camera and advanced imaging instruments to perform diabetic eye exams.

Digital Retina Imaging

Digital Retina Imaging

Using a digital camera system, our optometrists at Balfour Vision Optix Optometry can clearly see and examine your retina, located at the back of your eye. This examination is critical to monitoring the health of your eye as well as to the early detection of many medical problems. The pictures generated through retinal imaging help us identify problems with your vision and can also help diagnose other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, or even brain tumors.

Digital retinal imaging is important because, often, vision or eye problems can develop with no clear symptoms. Subtle changes in your vision can be hard to detect and diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, or retinal tears may only be visible through these images. Even in healthy eyes, retinal imaging is important as it allows us to track changes in your eyes over time so we can better predict and prepare for common issues that affect eyes as they age.

Dry Eye Treatment

Ocular Surface Disease, also known as dry eye, can occur from certain medications, naturally by aging, or as a symptom arising from systemic diseases such as Sjogren’s syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis, or Lupus. With dry eyes, you may experience irritation, excessive tearing, fluctuating vision, and/or a burning sensation in your eyes. Excessive dry eyes, or dry eye symptoms that go untreated, have the potential to damage eye tissue, scar the surface of the eye, and impair your vision. Balfour Vision Optix Optometry is proud to offer various dry eye treatments. Envision by InMode is the latest in dry eye treatments. It is a radiofrequency and intense pulse light (IPL) device. The radiofrequency warms and unclogs your meibomian glands (which are the oil glands near the eyelashes). The IPL helps with inflammation, rosacea and chronic blepharitis/demodex which are other attributing factors for dry eyes. These treatments will improve your dry eye symptoms and reduce your constant need to use eye drops. The radiofrequency device can also treat styes, which are bumps on your eyelid that won’t go away with warm compresses and sometimes need to be surgically removed. Call us if you would like more information.

Glaucoma Evaluation and Management

Glaucoma occurs from damage to the eye’s optic nerve and can often lead to loss of vision and blindness. To detect glaucoma, our highly trained doctors will perform a proper screening using advanced digital imaging instruments to determine severity, examine the damage, and help you manage your glaucoma. Early detection of glaucoma is crucial in preventing vision loss and blindness. However, there is no official cure for glaucoma. There are several treatment methods that manage, slow down, or halt the process. Treatment for glaucoma will vary depending on the stage and severity for each individual patient.

Keratoconus

Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory disorder that affects the cornea. The cornea becomes thinned and steepened, resulting in distorted vision, sensitivity to light, and decreased vision. Symptoms typically manifest in a person’s younger years, usually the late teens or 20’s. Keratoconus can affect a person’s ability to read or drive because at times, it is difficult to obtain clear vision with traditional glasses, which can be a major obstacle for people. Luckily, there are new treatments available like Cross Linking procedures to slow the progression and scleral lenses to improve clarity of the vision. Dr. Ong specializes in the fitting of the scleral lenses. Schedule your appointment today to see if scleral lenses will be beneficial for you.

LASIK Co-Management

LASIK Co-Management

LASIK stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis and is a popular surgery to correct vision problems. LASIK can help people who are nearsighted or farsighted, as well those who have astigmatism. LASIK works by reshaping the cornea with a laser, which allows light to be correctly focused onto the retina. A laser is used to create a small flap in the cornea, which is peeled back so another laser can reshape the cornea. The flap is then placed back and the surgery is complete. Dr. Ong works with experienced lasik surgeons. Call us today if you would like to schedule a lasik consultation.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration Evaluation and Management

Macular degeneration is a deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the inside layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them through the optic nerve from the eye to the brain for processing. The macula, or the center of the retina, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye and controls our ability to see and process information. At Balfour Vision Optix Optometry, our doctors are able to examine the retinal layers in the macula using our advanced retinal imaging instruments (OCT-Optical Coherence Tomography) to detect early macular changes and refer for treatment if needed.

Myopia Control

Myopia Control

Myopia, known as nearsightedness, makes it difficult to see objects from afar. If you are experiencing nearsightedness, corrective lenses such as glasses or contact lenses will be prescribed. Myopia Control is recommended when a child’s prescription increases at a fast rate. This is a concern because increasing myopia can lead to high myopia and potential retinal problems affecting vision. Ortho-K lenses, low dose atropine eye drops, and special soft contact lenses are available options for myopia control. Ortho-k involves temporarily reshaping the cornea through the use of specialized contact lenses, which are designed to be worn while sleeping. Soft contact lenses option for myopia control are worn during the day. Low dose atropine drops are placed in the eyes nightly. All treatments are still being studied on its effectiveness and providing good results so far. Call us if you are interested in myopia control options for your child.

Pediatric Eye Exams

Here at Balfour Vision Optix Optometry, we are proud to offer pediatric eye examinations. Children should have their first eye exam around the age of six months. For this reason, you should schedule yearly or bi-yearly examinations to ensure that your child’s eyes are healthy and that he or she can see clearly.
